Please excuse me if I repeat some of what you already know, or that they posted, it's easier for me this way. To add to the good information posted by RON & Tom: #PHILADELPHIA WATCH CASE COMPANY 4316614 DOWNLOAD#Quite often one of the members will download a page from an archived catalog. I believe that that there is an Encyclopedia article on watch cases. Also under Federal law cases sold after had to be marked "gold filled" and no longer warrantied for X number of years. In those cases dating can be better, but not in your watch's case. 1920 more and more watches were sold factory cased. In that era most pocket watches were sold as separate movements and separate cases to married by the jeweler at time of sale. To my eye the case your Waltham is in is appropriate for the time frame of the movement's manufacture and 1915 seems a good approximate date based on my information (Waltham Gray Book). However collectors knowledgeable about cases can approximately date cases based on style. Pocket watch cases are somewhat of a mystery as the watch case companies did not keep records relating case number to date of manufacture or if they did that information has been lost. You really seem to have a good handle on the details of your watch, much more so than many who post here asking for IDs on their pocket watch. Any corrections to the description above would also be great. I would appreciate any information about the case, such as the year it was made, where it might have been sold, etc. In fact, it almost seems like no two cases are alike! cases on eBay and other websites, and haven't found any that match my watch. I've looked at many examples of Philadelphia Watch Case Co. ![]() #PHILADELPHIA WATCH CASE COMPANY 4316614 SERIAL#My understanding is that, unlike the Waltham movement's serial number, the case number does not provide any identifying information (it is an internal number used by the manufacturer). #PHILADELPHIA WATCH CASE COMPANY 4316614 SERIAL NUMBER#The case serial number (8687666) appears in several other places on the case. The markings on this inner cover (see photo) indicate that the case was made by the Philadelphia Watch Case Company, and the Crown logo and "Guaranteed Twenty Years" inscription imply that it is a gold-filled case, with the outer coating of gold (10K I believe) guaranteed not to wear away for 20 years. ![]() I know that it is a Hunter case and that it has three separate pieces: one in front, covering the watch face a "cuvette" in back and an inner cover under the cuvette that can be removed to expose the watch works. ![]() I've had less luck in identifying the watch case, but here is what I have been able to find out so far. The Waltham serial number database indicates that the movement was manufactured in 1915 and provides a lot of other information about it. The watch consists of a Waltham movement (serial number 20214473) and a Philadelphia Watch Case Co. I am planning to hand it down to a younger member of my family and was hoping to learn as much as I can about the watch to add to the "back story" description that I will put together. This watch was given to me over 45 years ago by my grandfather and is a prized possession of mine. I am trying to find out some information about the pocket watch shown in the attached photos. ![]()
